The Cathedral Atrium

South of the Nymphaeum, an elaborate staircase rises from the cardo maximus to Jerash's only cathedral. Little more than a modest Byzantine church, it was constructed in the second half of the 4th century on the site of earlier temples. The cathedral consisted of a soaring basilica supported by three naves, and it boasted a magnificent portal finely decorated with elaborate marble carvings. It's a fascinating insight into the many periods of Jerash's history. While the cathedral may be modest compared to other renowned cathedrals in the region, it offers valuable insights into the historical layers and periods of Jerash's history. Exploring this structure allows visitors to appreciate the Byzantine era and observe the transition and adaptation of religious sites over time. Visiting the cathedral provides an opportunity to witness the architectural and artistic achievements of the past, as well as appreciate the rich heritage and cultural significance of Jerash.
